What ever is happening in Asbury it is great to see! To possibly see younger people in mass actually walking out II Chronicle 7:14 cannot due anything but wake the Lord to move. So many people quote what I call the revival verse, II Chronicles 7:14, but very few as well as those around them really press in and repent for themselves and their people.
Patterns
God is faithful to follow patterns, such as the one promised in II Chronicles 7:14.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
This passage was not written until the life of Solomon, yet God had been practicing it for hundreds of year and still practices it today. We first see it when the children of Israel were in bondage in Egypt, they cried out and God heard from heaven and sent a deliverer, Moses. God continued to follow this pattern through the book of Judges and with the Kings as well. We can expect his promises to be true to day.
Repentance
It is one thing to repent for personal actions but another to cry out for the sins of our people. Daniel is one of the greatest examples.
Daniel 9: 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; 5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: 6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
Daniel confesses the sins of all Israel. Sometimes we can feel like we are not responsible for the sins of our nation but even Daniel, a man that lived a life so close to God that lions would not harm him, confessed the sins of his people. Our prayers need to be ones that we confess all the horrific things in our society as us being a part of this society. We truly wish for revival to sweep through effect the entire society, not just blessing on us believers.
Old Testament Revival
The word revival is not in the King James translation, Old Testament of New, yet what we wish to see and God has done many times we recognize as a supernatural move of his Spirit that brings people back around to a closer life with Him. In the Old Testament, the picture of revival is basically war. Whether with the judges or kings of the Old Testament, the people fell away from God and his ways and enemies came in and oppressed them. To remove the oppressors God usually raised up someone and put in their heart to lead in a battle with enemy. In all cases, there was no one these people could win, they had to have supernatural help from God. So many examples from David and Goliath to the walls of Jericho falling down. We are in a war today, but not a physical one, but a spiritual war and we can not win without supernatural help from God. This is the key to real revival, there must be supernatural activity present, things that could not happen unless God was present. Over the years in some of the great moves of God some of these things were as simple as unbelievably large crowds showing up that churches could not hold them, as with George Whitfield who spoke to crowds as large as 30,000 with no amplification in the 1700s to miraculous and instantaneous healings. Other common evidences are speaking in tongues, being slain in the Spirit, and most of all a new renewed passion to live for the Lord. A full blown revival that will affect the cultural most have His Presence and Power!
Nay Sayers
There will always be Nay Sayers to any move of God. William Seymour of the Azuza Street revival was heavily influenced by Charles Param Fox who was a fellow revivalist, yet when God moved at Azusa street Fox denounced it as not of God. Yet Azusa Street birthed almost every existing Pentecostal movement that exist today. John Wimber a revivalist and founder of the Vineyard movement denounced what God was doing in the Toronto Out Pouring. Seems like the older revivalist always denounce what God is doing today, Lord help us. So we can expect nay sayers of Asbury, maybe even some of great reputation and even toward whatever else God does in the earth.
His Presence
Sad to say so many live lives without feeling the presence of God and when God’s presence shows up somewhere they think it’s a great miracle never seen before. God’s presence is a promise found in such a simple verse most of us know.
Psalm 100:1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. 2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, [and] into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, [and] bless his name.
Psalm 100 is a promise to us! We literally move into the spiritual gates of God as we come before him with a thankful heart and we move from that position to an even closer position, his spiritual court, as we praise Him. This is a promise, and this promise is true. I believe the people of Asbury are walking this out and see this promise come true for them. Once in the courts of God, things start happening in the supernatural. Please don’t confuse this with a typical Sunday morning service in most churches. This is an individual thing or corporate gathering in which majority of the participants are serious worshipers, what I call an inner court meeting referring to something set apart as in the tabernacle in the wilderness.
Conclusion
Asbury is a great thing whether it continues or as is changes, its birth is great and should inspire us all. People with good intentions often are the ones that stop what God is doing so we have to wait and see and pray for these people and maybe we ought to do the same here in our own communities.
