Feeding the 5000 – The Menu

This is the second message from the story of the feeding of five thousand. In this message I want to talk about the menu and what it says to us.

Matthew 14:17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

Bread and Fish

As I share about what I feel the Lord would want us to see here, and want to talk about the two items and the quantity of each. Jesus could perform any miracle he wished like making food out of nothing or multiplying one loaf and one fish or twenty loaves and ten fish. The scenario could have been many if all he wanted to do was feed the crowd but Jesus always does more. So the bread and fish have significant meaning so does the quantity and the ration of bread to fish. So let’s dig in!

The Bread

Bread says so much in the Word especially since the Word of God is often referred to as bread.

John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

There are many more references from the Bible about Jesus and the Word of God being bread. When the Word is presented to us as bread, this bread is about being consumed and receiving nutrients for life. Matthew 14:13 tells us they were in a desert place and in this place there was no way to survive unless Jesus feed them.  Often our world is a desert place and we are looking for a way to survive and so first of all bread is a choice presented to us to survive both here on earth and eternally with the Lord.

Nutritional Value and Shelf Life of Bread

Compared to the fish in the natural and nutritional value, bread has a modest amount of protein at two to four grams of protein per ounce of bread, while the fish has almost double the protein. Is all this important? Absolutely, not one thing in the word is not there for some purpose.  In real life we make call bread a staple that we consume with almost all meals. Almost all cultures include some kind of bread as a staple in their diet and for most meals. From what we know here in America, white bread, biscuits, and rolls to a tortilla to pita bread in other cultures bread plays a significant role in the daily diet of most people.  So for many people no matter what you eat, varieties of meat and vegetables, the same bread of that culture will be included.  The timeless written word of God, the Bible, is the bread of life and should be a large part of a spiritual meal for every believer every day. Do not miss-understand me, I am not saying other Christian writings should be part, the other parts are prophetic words, worship, prayer, and servicing are other aspects of our spiritual growth and endurance.

Matthew 6:11Give us this day our daily bread.

Just like the manna that fell from heaven daily even Jesus taught his disciples about the bread being needed daily, both in the natural and in the spirit. The staple for all believers is the timeless written word of God that we find in the Bible.

Nutritional Value and Shelf Life of Fish

Fish differs so much from bread in its shelf life and its nutritional value.  Other than drying fish, fish in general has a short shelf life. Most shoppers are very careful when buying fresh fish to make sure it truly is fresh.  Even packaging we have today such as canning or frozen fish do nothing for the fish once it is opened and readied for consumption, it must be used shortly. The shorter period of freshness or even safe consumption mirrors what the fish represents spiritually, the “Now Prophetic Word.”  Please compare the “Timeless Written Word” compared to the “Now Prophetic Word.” The Bible is the timeless word of God for all generations and has great value for anyone to learn about God and learn about their lives in general in serving God.  The prophetic word of God, delivered prophetically to a person or group personally by a prophet or prophetic experience often is more detailed to a current situation and has a shelf life.  As an example anyone can learn from reading the Bible that we all need to be witnesses and reach out to others with the good news and that will always be for anyone or any generation.  But if an individual is given a prophet dream or word to witness let’s say to a co-worker and they are given an exact name and date to do so, this is a higher detailed more specific word that has a shelf life and will be more impacting as well. Fish in real life is the same way; more stamina can be gained by the consumption of fish over bread.

The Balance

People historically died of scurvy traveling on ships because of lack balance in their diet.  The missing element was vitamin C from these sailors but today we have people that have an imbalance in their spiritual diet that is causing some to become spiritual sick and deficient as well because they love personal prophecy more than the written word.  There were five loaves and only two fish and I believe this is God showing us in the written word a balance we must have.  There are people today traveling meeting to meeting in search of a prophetic word over their life that never or hardly ever read their Bible.  There are others that only read the books written by others and never the Bible and this too is a spiritual diet imbalance.  Personal prophetic words are so awesome to receive but do not neglect the Bible as well.

Doers of the Word

Of this group, primarily the disciples and Jesus, the leader, were the doers of the Word.  The multitude were casual listeners of the word and were looking to be healed, delivered, and feed to please their carnal lives and not as concerned with their spiritual growth.

James 1: 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

Whether you are consuming the Bible, the timeless word of God or the Now Word of God, personal prophecy, we must be doers of the word of God. God has given methods to check and verify personal prophecy and when it has been verified, it carries equal weight to the written word of God and will not contradict the written word of God either but only add time, people, or place to it, for a season, thus the shorter shelf life. Obviously any one will tell you to follow the written word of God, but please take just as seriously the now prophetic word of God and be a doer of it as well.
