Who or What is Leviathan?

The Father’s House Church of Stockton

Many Christians are always up for a good dragon slaying and go about binding and loosing and pulling down strongholds and principalities as a part of their spiritual warfare life.  They love to quote Luke 10:19 (Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.) claiming to have and operate in all power yet none have ever been known to use that power to empty the local hospital.   I believe in the power of God, I believe we have certain authorities in Christ and that Christ can give authority and power to bring down a principality and empty a hospital to an individual if He chooses, but it is not available at all times to all Christians.

Hopefully I haven’t lost you yet. Leviathan and other regional principalities are real and have real effect on the regions that God has allowed them to effect.  The Bible is much clearer on their effect and how they are removed than most would think. Using just the Bible we can stitch together the causes and effects and see how this dragon works and what it takes to get God to step in and bring the dragon down.

In the New Testament regional control by spirits, stronghold, and or principalities is much harder to understand than the Old Testament examples. In fact to be clear, we have do not have a charge in any epistle or the gospels to engage in spiritual warfare of any kind. Ephesian six lets us know that these things are opposing us and tells us how to stand, but we are not given examples of offensive actions or offensive prayer strategies to bring them down. Frankly we gain ground in the spirit and in the natural with every soul that is saved and then disciple each of them, which is the great commission. If you are getting the message the primary task of every Christian is to win others to Christ and speak into the lives of others to disciple them, spiritual warfare is basically a rare calling.  The cults are out going door to door promoting their message while Christians form houses of prayer and worship and often neglect what should be routine sharing of the gospel in our neighborhoods and streets. Prayer and worship are important but even more so is getting the laborers into the harvest. Praying for labors in the harvest is one of only a few commands to specific prayer in the Bible.

What’s With Leviathan & Job?

Six times in the Word of God is Leviathan mentioned by name, all these accounts are in the Old Testament.  There many other times and places where it is alluded to by the description or cross referencing.

Job 3:8 May those curse it who curse the day, Those who are ready to arouse Leviathan.

Strangely after Job has his encounter with Satan, Job causally mentions Leviathan very close to the beginning of the book of Job, but why?  Then as God reveals himself to Job at the end of the book God spends the entire chapter 41 of Job describing Leviathan.  So why would one book of the Bible mention Leviathan in beginning when problems arise and extensively at the end as God brings about healing and restoration? I think the answer is that Job is an example of living under the principality called Leviathan.

Short Synopsis of the Story of Job

Job is a very traditional religious man, so much so God even says that Job is perfect an upright in all his ways. We know Job was not perfect like Jesus, so we know this means Job followed the rules and ceremonies correctly.  We also find the Job was a very fearful guy, not sure of his relationship with God, so much so at the end of the book says he only knew God by rumors.

Job 3:25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

Job 42:5 I admit I once lived by rumors of you; now I have it all firsthand—from my own eyes and ears! The Message

We are not told specifically, but using the Word to interpret the Word, fear opened the door for Satan to unleash Leviathan, with Job being the focal point. How often do we repeat the passage that God is pleased by faith, which fear is the opposite.  A basically a good man, filled with fear, loses his health, his family, and his wealth and is surrounded by other believers that do more harm than good for his condition.  This is a familiar pattern in much of the American church world where people are going through difficult times and everyone has advice that does not help in many cases.  Just in the last few days I have heard difficult situations described and people begin go through a spiritual check off lists to find the problem, often these lists are so juvenile they are insulting at best. Did you pray? Do you have open doors? Comments very close to what Job received from his friends are seen in our world today. Based on this we can see some of the symptoms of Leviathan are a low amount of faith, lots of traditional religion, judgmental advice, loss of health, loss of family, and loss of financial resources, leaving one in an almost hopeless place.

Egypt is Host to Leviathan as Well

Working backwards we can look at Psalms 74 and we are told Leviathan was pushed back by God in the Exodus.

Psalms 74:13 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. 14 Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness. 15 Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.

Leviathan is not even mentioned in Exodus at all yet the writer of Psalms 74 tells us Leviathan was a spiritual force against God’s people and it was crushed by God when the Red Sea was parted. When God first drew my attention to this I immediately was drawn to other times when waters were parted asking the question, was Leviathan dealt with at these times as well?

Let’s stay in Egypt for a moment more.  What was life like for the believer in Egypt? Over the 400 years of captivity, the children of Israel grew greatly in numbers and diminished from those that ruled down to servant with little rights at all. They had lives of hard work with no opportunity to get ahead.  Even their oppressors were fearful of them and began killing babies as a method to control the population.  Instead of habitual traditional religion being the problem, the people had begun adopting some of the ways of the Egyptians. The most common thing is that the people were trapped in a position with no hope of getting out of it.

The Victory

Exodus 14:13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

Just before God parts the Red Sea, Moses speaks the word of the Lord for the first time that the Israelites would never see the Egyptians again and it happens in the sea at the same time the waters are parted and Psalms 74:13, 14 are taking place with Leviathan’s head being broken. In the natural God created a situation that matched what He was doing in the spirit realm as well.

The Pharaoh and the people of Egypt had become an extension of Leviathan, literally becoming Leviathan’s mouth piece and hands to come down on the people of God. In the writing of Ezekiel and Daniel we have referenced of earthly kings possessed and driven by fallen angels, so Pharaoh being controlled by Leviathan is not uncommon.

Ezekiel 28:12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13  Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

According to Ezekiel the King of Tyrus was possessed and controlled by Satan himself. As Daniel writes, a powerful fallen angel was controlling the prince of Persia as well as opposing the angel that was trying to answer Daniel’s prayer.

Daniel 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

More Waters Parted

As I mentioned previously, what happened when other waters were parted? We are not told whether Leviathan was in the Jordan river or another principality but powers obviously fell when the Jordan river was parted on two separate occasions. The first occasion was when Joshua crossed the Jordan on dry ground during the times of high waters. Within days of crossing the Jordan, God brought the walls of Jericho down and began working with the children of Israel to possess the land and drive out the inhabitants. Powers protecting and helping the Canaanites were destroyed. Years later evil crept back into the land in the form of un-godly kings and the woman Jezebel and the river is parted again.  At this time, Israel is almost completely given over to Baal worship and Jezebel and Ahab as central figures of wickedness, oppressors of the true worshippers of God. The land is impoverished, in the midst of a drought, and wickedness prevailed, even God’s prophets were being killed.  Within days of Elijah passing his mantel to Elisha, which took place at the parting of the Jordan River, Jezebel and Ahab are driven out.  Again neither of these events proclaim that Leviathan or any other power occupying the river was destroyed but with the patterns of the word, there is a cause and effect when a body of water is parted that evil falls and the righteous prevail.

Isaiah Tells us About Leviathan Too

Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Isaiah lived hundreds of years after Moses and Joshua and sometime after Ahab and Jezebel as well.  Isaiah says “In that day” the Lord is going to take care Leviathan again. As God makes this pronouncement against Leviathan, he gives us some more attributes of this powerful spirit. He calls him piercing and crooked. The word piercing means fleeing as in escaping, maybe even as a serpent pierces the surface of water as it escapes.  The word crooked means just about what we get, crooked or twisted.  Some Bible scholars believe that this may not only be the figure of this spirit but what he does to those around it.  He causes things to be twisted in how they are presented of received; no one is ever on the same page.  People say one thing, the listeners hear something else. Remember as Isaiah wrote, God will punish Leviathan, not the prophetic intercessors.

Too Much Info

There is a lot to study on Leviathan and the dragon(s) the Bible has much more than most people realize.  Use your word search in your Bible program and look for serpent, dragon, Leviathan, and Rahab when you are studying to find more details of their behavior. I don’t want this post to be just about the attributes of Leviathan but how does the New Testament church deal with it, so I am moving on here.

A Simple Question

What would take more authority and anointing, healing one case of cancer or removing a principality that had millions God’s people bound for almost 400 years? Bring the question home, what would take more anointing and authority, to send away the oppressing spirit of the city of Stockton or bring immediate relief to the biggest need presently in your household? Obviously that biggest need in many households even if they are huge is nothing like removing the evil influence off a city of over a quarter million people.  If it was that easy and the anointing and authority was in place, we would be hearing the testimonies of cities being set free of evil every day.  It has happened in history, but many more people have had individual miracles than city wide ones. Saying all that to say there is no precedent or New Testament example of city wide, state wide, or national spiritual warfare.  On the other hand there is exhortation and example of one on one ministry of the Gospel of the Kingdom in salvations, healings, discipleship, and deliverance. Putting on the whole amour is about standing your ground, not taking ground, it doesn’t come with a megaphone to curse demons with.  Ground is captured and retained by getting people saved and discipled, no other way.

II Chronicles 7:14 Is Always the Answer

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Even in Egypt, hundreds of years before II Chronicles was written, the answer was the same.

Exodus 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

In the book of Judges, again hundreds of years before II Chronicles was written it was the answer.

Judges 3:9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

Judges 3:15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

Judges 4:3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

God’s word is so true, in the first four chapters of Judges the pattern has shown up three times and many more times in the remainder of Judges. God’s people crying out for help when wickedness prevails and a loving God responding from heaven to heal the land.  When God’s people humble themselves, God begins taking steps to heal the land, in most cases raising up a deliverer, like Moses or one of the judges.  In each of these cases there is no mention of Leviathan working behind the evil but we must assume according to the pattern that there is some sort of spiritual wickedness in high places at work.

It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better

John Paul Jackson has a book and a teaching that was controversial with some, called “Needless Casualties of War.” In this teaching John Paul shows how God showed him people are being harmed as they oppose spiritual forces they are not called or anointed to take on offensively.  You have been to the prayer meeting where someone bound every principality from here to China as they prayed, maybe it was you?  We all have prayed in error at times.  God showed John Paul that attacking a principality without the call, the office, the timing, and the authority, that the principality retaliated against these people and ministries doing so.  What John Paul Jackson shares about this topic really witness to me, even though he caught flak from Job’s friends, I mean the traditional religious crowd. So off I went to search the scriptures to see if it were true like the Berean’s.  Guess what it is true!  As soon as Moses, who did have authority to oppose Pharaoh, began to do so, life got worse for the Hebrews, their straw was taken away.  The Hebrews has to work around all the rest of the plagues as well and live in greater fear of retribution until the head of Leviathan was crushed in the Red Sea.  That’s only one example, I have more!  Elijah is called to oppose the prophets of Baal and Jezebel, the first thing he does is cause a draught on all people.  Both the good and bad suffered under the draught and prophets were killed and other had to live in caves fed with bread and water until Jezebel was killed and the spirit behind her.  Anyone else attempting to do what Moses and Elijah did would have been killed on the spot, I believe the pattern is the same today.

How Does This Work In Home Town America?

Did I mention II Chronicles 7:14? I know I did but I want to make sure the church is getting this. The entire Bible shows us God’s heart and ways and this passage is a key to revival and renewal that comes not from man’s hard work but from supernatural blessing from above. The key to revival or another great awaking, is the church crying out, seeing how broken down the walls of the church is today.  Instead what I see is Christians that are quite happy.  Look at typical Christian pictures posted on Facebook. Looks like they are having the time or their life, cruises, vacations, sipping wine, Disneyland, you name it. I know God wants us to be blessed is what you will say. We will cry out if another 9-11 takes place, or another Katrina, wouldn’t rather have revival now? Oppression of Christianity is on the rise.  Christianity gets more scrutiny than any other belief system here in America. While the church is sipping wine and going on an Apostolic/Prophetic Caribbean Cruise and posting the pictures on Facebook we are faced with homosexual rights and issues like never before. If you haven’t noticed we have at minimum, a past and not repented of Muslim as president and are planning on running a current Mormon against him. In over 200 years we have never had a non-Christian president. I am not saying God is calling us to poverty, I am saying I see more of the body is pleasure mode than broken before the Lord so the he will hear in heaven and heal the land as he has promised and exampled so many times.

Thank God for the Remnant

God has always worked with small numbers to show his power and it is a remnant of some sort most every time. In Egypt it was a few intercessors that cried out and believed God and God raised up a single deliverer in Moses.  Today Moses would be an apostolic leader with message and method for the hour to turn a city, state, or nation around. Moses passed his mantel to Joshua and victory and understanding of God grew with Joshua as well.  Once the mantel was lost, darkness returned until the intercessors cried out again. Today I really believe many people have some level of apostolic anointing and call on their life, but I question is there anyone today even close to Moses, Joshua, Elisha, or one of the Judges? If there is an apostle of like anointing and authority where is the fruit? The truth is there are more titles than fruit in most cases. Paul went into a city and the city was in an uproar because of him as a New Testament example, it should be happening today in America. Thankfully the word says one can put a thousand to flight and two ten thousand, so it only takes a remnant of II Chronicles 7:14 soldiers to get his attention. Here in Stockton that remnant is growing among the people, not so much among clergy but the people.  Citizens are getting interested in praying for their city and quoting II Chronicles 7:14.

Daniel a holy man of God repented for his people.

Daniel 9:20  And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;

Daniel was such a righteous man that the Lord shut the mouth of the lions, yet Daniel still repented for the sins of his people. Check out your favorite School of the Supernatural and ask if they have a class on how to repent for the sins of the church and how to become more humble. Most likely you won’t find it that class, if you do take it, bless it.  Trained warriors are worthless without a humble repented church. Unfortunately pride often accompanies the trained warriors.

What Will It Look Like?

God follows patterns yet never seems to do things exactly the same. I believe when the voice of the God’s people in repentance and humility reaches the threshold that God expects, anointed apostles of God will come out of nowhere and began shaking their world with the word and signs and wonders, great awakenings will start where the people repented and became humble. We have signs and wonders now, not like what it will take to shake a city.

Stockton is a Great Candidate

Stockton is a great candidate for God to move. Not only has God said by his prophets that Stockton is going to have a move of God but Stockton is in such bad condition, people are starting to pray.  Revival and healing is not about a prophetic word, it is about His people humbling themselves, repenting, and turning from their wicked ways.  Stockton’s economy remains stagnant, unemployment higher than the state average, in a state with a higher than national average of unemployment.  More churches are for sale and closing up than ever, attendance in the remaining churches is mostly down.  So does Stockton have a Leviathan like spirit working on it?  The short answer is yes. I have met many different people that are aware of various attributes of evil opposing Stockton but even if we know more or all, for most of us, the battle is on our knees in humility and repentance. Let God raise up the deliverer and God smite the head of our Leviathan; let’s just get it right on our knees.
